Gerald Brenan, in The Literature of the Spanish People, has called it'not only the first European novel, but one of the greatest, and it is as a novel that this lewd and spendid tragi-comedy must be regarded. Anticpating Romeo and Juliet with his sstory of possionate and consuming love, Fernando de Rojas, a converted Jew, created in the Falstaffian character of Celestina, the bawd, one of the most vivid personalities in all literature.
